belief systems supposedly advocate peace and harmony. It is true that religion itself is not the cause of terrorism, and that there are other socio-cultural factors which lead to violence;
however, as Juergensmeyer states, religion can provide a form of quasi-moral justification which allows the perpetrators of violence to vindicate their actions. Religion, as
he points out, provides a moral justification for violence, since it sets it the context of a cosmic battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. Because
of this worldview, polarities develop which make dialogue and compromise impossible: if one is not actively "for" Christianity, then one is by default "for" the Devil: there is no middle
ground. Juergensmeyer analyses the phenomenon of religious violence in relation to a wide range of groups, from most of the worlds major faiths: he
notes that one of the factors they all have in common is their hatred of secular governments which permit disagreement with their views or which allow others to practice behaviours
which the religious group has deemed immoral. In many cases, violence is seen as an acceptable means to an end because they hope the outcome will be radical changes in
society, leading to their religious viewpoint forming the basis of social morality. However, there is also something of a grey area, as regards the alliance
between peaceful protest groups and their more forceful associates. In an article from 2002, for example, Joseph asserts that Weslin, the founder of the Lambs for Christ anti-abortion movement, is
