a higher power and many esoteric ideas, but they do not go to church every week and subscribe to an authority within a mainline religion. Instead, they find their own paths to deeper meaning in their lives. In this context, religious thinking is viewed as rigid and unenlightened. According to the spiritual, people are acting like sheep and just following the rules. Of course, another way of looking at religious thinking is to assume the thinking is aligned with spirituality. That is, someone who is religious not only follows the rules-if they actually do-but they truly look at life in a spiritual manner. They look at coincidence as a sign from the universe. They pray and think that their prayers are answered, even if that answer is "no" at times. They have faith and live by that faith, experiencing a joy that is indescribable. With those feelings come thoughts about the way in which the world works that is different from ordinary secular thought. Rosengren & Harris (2000) remark that anthropologists generally assume that people embrace religious or magical thinking and suspend the constraints of their concepts of causality. This is a rational assumption. After all, if people believe in God, they believe that the cause of everything is attached to higher level thought over and above the mundane. Yet, authors go on to say that Boyer believes that it is empirical expectation as opposed to principles of causation that are suspended by the religious sort (Rosengren & Harris, 2000). In other words, people expect the future to be a certain way due to the religious or magical thinking. They believe that if they pray, they can almost will events to happen.
