In Pauls epistles, we find 10 in Romans, 1 in each letter to the Corinthians, 1 each in Galatians, Ephesians and Philippians, 3 in each letter to Timothy, 1 in Titus and 3 in Hebrews (NASB, 1997). There are at least seven others that use the word merciful. The numerical count is for the purpose of demonstrating how important the theme of mercy is in the four Gospels and in the Epistles of Paul. The General Directory For Catechesis uses the word mercy only twice. First in the introduction, p 14: "The purpose of this Introduction is to foster in pastors and catechists a greater consciousness of the necessity to keep in mind the field in which the seed is sown, and to do so with the perspective of faith and mercy" (The Roman Curia, n.d.). The second occurrence is found as part of the section on the Revelation of Gods Providential Plan, paragraph 37:37. The "providential plan" of the Father, fully revealed in Jesus Christ, is realized by the power of the Holy Spirit. This implies: - the Revelation of God, of his "innermost truth," of his "secret," of the true vocation and dignity of the human person - the offer of salvation to all men, as a gift of Gods grace and mercy, which implies freedom from evil, sin and death - the definitive call to gather into the family of God all of his scattered children, thus realizing a fraternal union amongst men (The Roman Curia, n.d.).
