like most of Northern Europe was a pagan country until about the tenth century. The Orthodox version of Christianity from the Byzantium was officially adopted by the country in
988 AD. Iconography is unique to the Russian Orthodox experience. These two dimensional wall pieces are spectacular due to their use of metals and jewels. The saints face
and hand may be shown in realistic detail, but the rest of their visual body is covered in metals that are geometric in design or fine tooled or cut to
the quality of lace. The faces and hands of these icons appear almost as burnished leather, but that may be due either to the age and quality of the
painted surface, or may have been colored by the smoke from incense or candle flames. Some of the effect of that dark brownish skin tones may also be due
to the contrast which is provided with the oil paint and the shinier metallic surface. Icons which I would suggest viewing include: St. Nicholas the Miracleworker. This
