recently, was not necessarily appreciated for what it was, which was essentially a powerful commentary on the changes in society and the changes that would come. As such Robert Browning
stands as a poet who existed in a time of transition not only in society but in art as well. One of the biggest changes in the society of Brownings
time was the change in perspectives concerning religion. With Darwinism becoming more widely accepted, religion was often left to flounder in the changing society. In light of this we can
understand that Brownings work reflected this change in society to some extent, presenting the reader with a different sort of religious examination. With this in mind the following paper examines
three of Brownings poems and discusses how they reflect a perspective on religion. The poems discussed are "The Boy and the Angel," "Life in Love," and "Love in Life."
Poetry and Religion The first poem to be examined is "The Boy and the Angel" and as the title might suggest, it is somewhat religious in nature. There is
a very humble and real simplicity to this particular poem as it speaks of praising God in the most gentle and humble manners. It speaks of mankind, perhaps, as they
try to be more than they are. In this poem we have a simple boy who works and praises God. He is told that the Pope praises God as well,
and the boy wishes that he might be able to praise God as the pope and then die. His wish is granted, and the angel Gabriel takes his place. But,
