However, it is also a term that is difficult to define due to its subjective nature. Religion is not only an emotive and personal subject it is also a subject that can never truly be agreed upon. The definition of religion is linked with belief, belief in and a reverence for a higher power, normally a supernatural power that by many is regarded as a creator or ruler of the universe. Moreover religion can be an institution that brings together the beliefs and worship of deities and non deities into a grounded faction (Horton, 1960) The Oxford English dictionary gives a rather dry definition stating religion is the "Human recognition of superhuman controlling power and especially of a personal God entitled to obedience". This dies not refer directly to a god, but to higher powers, but according to this there may be some belief systems that would not be included, if they did not believe in this higher power. Merriam-Websters English Dictionary gives a much broader definition; "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardour and faith" this is much broader, but may also be argued as week, as according this not only those beliefs that are held to according to the first definition may be seen as religion, but other strong beliefs which may include beliefs such as communism or Marxism. If we look to more academic sources these become more precise, William James gives the definition of religion being "the belief that there is an unseen order, and that our supreme good lies in harmoniously adjusting ourselves thereto."
