religion, especially if the Irish immigrants are presented in their historical pursuits. Two films which depict the Irish immigrant are the recent "Gangs of New York" and the 1992 film
"Far and Away." These two films offer the viewer different perspectives of the Irish immigrant, while also presenting somewhat different illustrations of the importance of religion in the lives of
the immigrants. The following paper first discusses "The Gangs of New York" and then discusses "Far and Away." The paper finishes with a comparison and contrast of the two.
Gangs of New York In the very beginning of this film we see religion as a powerful part of the story. This is evident in the man, played by
Liam Neeson, who is heading out to the battle scene in full religious glory. "From the final march of priest Vallon, to the gravestones at the edge of the world,
the reality behind the story of GANGS is suffused with Christianity. The five points is as close to a hell on Earth as is possible" (Rieneck). In this region "The
levels of immorality and crime defy belief. The church attempts to rectify this by its usual methods, namely, singing hymns, some preaching, soup kitchens and of course, beating morality into
the children in orphanages" (Rieneck). It is not, however, the Irish immigrant or Irish Catholic who are trying to change the region. All the attempts to religiously alter the
area however, fail miserably yet interestingly enough, the people in this hell are very religious. "Its just that their religion while completely Christian, is utterly different to the religion of
the church, and to the religion of anyone who happens to have any money at all" (Rieneck). This gives us the knowledge that Catholic or not, all people are merely
