A powerful component of such Imperialistic thought was religion, Christianity, and the superiority of those who believed in Jesus Christ. The following paper examines the role of religion in Defoes novel, illustrating how it reflects Imperialistic ideals of the time. Religion and Robinson Crusoe In the very beginning of the novel one sees that Crusoe is perhaps not the perfect Christian as symbolized in his relationship to his father and Crusoes desires to go have adventures. His father told him he should not embark on such a journey and Crusoe indicates his father tells him "that if I did take this foolish step, God would not bless me" (Defoe Chapter I). In this one sees the clear relationship between a father and God, with Crusoe disobeying both his father and the father of all men; God. However, Crusoe indicates that he did not listen nor heed either, that he left, "without asking Gods blessing or my fathers, without any consideration of circumstances or consequences" (Defoe Chapter I). In this beginning one sees that religion is a very important element in Crusoes world, in his society, and in his family unit. He did not care, however, and essentially ignored the will of God, or denied seeking out what the will of God may be, and left without approval. A good Christian man would likely have heeded his father, and looked within to see what God may have desired of him. But, in this the reader notes that he essentially did not care what God wanted from him.
