humanity, and the magic of a world that does not exist. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is a work that has been examined and analyzed from many
perspectives. Some claim that because it was written around the time of Hitler it was a commentary on the evils of Nazisim while others speak of how it is a
commentary on the destructive forces of industrialization and technological growth. And, still yet, another perspective involves the notion of religion. The following paper examines the life and ideals of J.R.R.
Tolkien regarding religion and his writing and then examines the religious content of the novel The Lord of the Rings. (It should be noted that this paper will refer to
the novel "The Lord of the Rings" rather than the trilogy as Tolkien intended the stories to be in one novel, not three). J.R.R. Tolkien and Religion It
is commonly known that "Tolkien himself was a staunch Roman Catholic and a brilliant intellectual and linguist" (Light for the Last Days). However, at the same time his focus of
study, his interest, lay in Celtic and Nordic mythology. In this we see that he was something of a contradiction, though an understandable one. He would claim at times that
the book was fundamentally Catholic and religious, but then would also claim that "There is no allegory -- moral, political, or contemporary -- in the work at all. It is
a fairy-story written for adults" (Light for the Last Days). It has also been noted that in his world he felt that the people needed a sort of history of
their own, a sort of mythology to think back upon. He was a very religious man who once wrote a letter that stated that the sole purpose of life
