philosophy but is noncommittal. Being religious seems to incorporate at least membership in a known church and not one that may be construed as a cult. The "religious right" however
is a group that may be a part of a larger cluster of churches that is extreme in its views, and thus is politically vocal in its opposition to things
such as abortion and homosexuality. Of course, most mainstream religions do interpret these things as going against church doctrine, but the truth is that many churches that are not radical
are seemingly more accepting. Indeed, some churches are considered to be "gay" churches and one has to then wonder what exactly does being religious in America mean. Can churches go
against accepted doctrine or is all doctrine subject to interpretation? It is hard to say, but what is important to look at in terms of religion is how culture and
society influences religious life. Moore (1994) looks at religion as if it is just one of many competitive entities. Like corporations, or politicians, religions and religious leaders compete for
market share. It is an unusual concept as most people assume that religion is sacrosanct and above advertising or the ways of the world. Moore shows that quite the opposite
is true. The message sent by this author seems to have merit. Children grow up in religions only to find, after they have taken their vows and "married" their
church through ceremony, that there are other ideas to explore. Yet, many religions look down on exploration and as part of their marketing schemes, make sure that their product is
