Religion is, and always has been, a driving force in society. This was particularly true, however, in Europe from the dawn of the
Renaissance to the eve of the French Revolution. Indeed, it might be contended that religion was the catalyst behind the many changes that occurred in European society during this
window of time in European history. Numerous examples can be provided to support this contention but none serve better than politics, art, and science. wars, controversies, scientific advances
and reactions to them The Renaissance consumed Europe from the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries (Kagan, Ozment, and Turner 37). The Renaissance
was actually a period in which practically every aspect of European life underwent radical evolution. Religion, however, retained tight control on that evolution. Consider, for example, the role
religion played in art of the time. Up until the Reformation, the Protestant Revolution of the sixteenth century, to contradict the teachings of the Church was an unforgivable
sin. To allow ones artistic creativity to produce a work of art which did so was just as unforgivable and subject
to extreme societal retributions. It wouldnt be until the latter Middle Ages that artists would be allowed to move somewhat outside the influence of the Church. The Protestant
