beyond the immediate confines of his community; certainly, he had no direct access to literary or journalistic outlets that might have preserved his legacy in a more concrete and objective fashion. The result is that what we know about Nat Turner is largely received through the interpretations of others, and for most of history, those "others" have consisted of the privileged class of white patriarchy that Turner himself so famously resisted. Consequently, one must view Turners legacy with a critical eye, exploring the impact which the authors of his historical representations had upon the characterization of Turner throughout history. Much has been written on the troublesome racial identity of Styrons 1967 novel, "The Confessions of Nat Turner", but the majority of these criticisms have treated the role of religion in that troublesome identification almost superficially. The reality is that, whatever Turner was, he was by all accounts a deeply religious individual; as such, any criticism of the subversion of Turners legacy by later writers must explore the instrumentality of religion in that subversion. This paper will explore the subject of Turners religious beliefs, and the implications of their representation in the many literary works written about the man. This paragraph helps the student begin to give a brief overview and background of Turner. To begin with, a brief word is necessary about Turners place in history. What is factually known about Turner, that is to say what is generally regarded as objectively reliable information, is that he was born as a slave of landowner Benjamin Turner, his parents being natively from Africa (Cromwell, 1920).
