when one culture looks towards another and applies their own values. Increased attention on the Middle East has created a greater interest in the role of women in the eastern
culture. The role of women in the Middle East has a strong link with the religion, however the interpretation of that link is one that has been subject to debate
for centuries; does religion create or reinforce oppression, does it create or support equally and provide opportunities, or is it is an unusual juxtaposition that may be seen as playing
both riles. The role of women has to be examined in the context of the culture and appreciated in terms of the historical development. To outsiders symbols such as
the headscarf or chador and divorcee laws which favour men are indicators of oppression and in equality, subjugating the females and from this perspective religion, especially Sharia law, is discriminatory.
However, for some the argument is that the culture treats women differently, but it is not one of inequality, and the differences in gender equality may be seen as equally
due to the level of economic development on many Middle East countries where there are limited resources. The link between development and gender equality is seen throughout the world and
not limited to the Middle East (Kandiyoti, 1991). To assess the link between women and region in the Middle East it is through the treatment, attitudes and underlying social
rules that the position and role can be fully appreciated, but this has to be undertaken in the Middle Eastern context. Before the interaction between women and religion is
considered there does need to be an acceptance that historical, women in the Middle East, just as anywhere else have had to fight for equality in a patriarchal society where
