the only way, and some of the followers are intolerant. Either way, without attention to whether or not beliefs are real, there is the notion that religion has an effect
on society. In fact, religion may affect society more than many people realize. Through the use of several theories, a student writing on this subject may want to explain how
sociological theory can explain religions role in society. First, it should be noted that the field of sociology embraces a number of theoretical paradigms. Structural functionalism is a theoretical model
that sees social institutions as separate and distinct from one another, each having a function, but also at the same time working together in a systemic manner. The theory is
more complicated than that, but that is one view of the theory. Conflict theorists on the other hand see society as being in conflict in some manner and often pits
one group against another. For Marx, for instance, it was the proletariat and the bourgeoisie who were at odds with each other. Finally, symbolic interactionism suggests that people act on
things based on specific meanings their actions and possessions have. Symbolic interactionism "attempts to understand society and social structure through an examination of the micro-level interactions of people as individuals,
pairs, or groups" (p. 19). People create meaning in society. How do each of these theories apply to religion? Structural functionalism may see religion as being important in
controlling the people and also offering them some semblance of solace. It is also where they get their morality. If people did not have religion, they may ignore ethical laws
and just do as they please. Religion, from a functional view, keeps the people in check. From a conflict perspective, religion allows for divides. Society is certainly divided by religion.
