was becoming a more evangelical subject than ever before. Christianity was spreading throughout the land, and the old pagan religions were diminishing. However, there was one solitary factor about the
spread of Christianity that should give any reader cause for concern. That is the rise in Christianity is also accompanied, and implicitly connected to the use of religion as a
political (and psychological) tool that was used to control people. Individuals within the hierarchy of the church or with a Christian education would use their knowledge and status to assert
superiority over any non-believer or non-educated individual. In medieval Britain there were very few people with much knowledge about the church or
the bible, other than what the church wanted them to have. Therefore there was little or no questioning of its teachings and the way in which the church operated. This
resulted in an easily manipulated populace. This had originally be the goal and reasoning behind decisions and implementations of the council Nicea a few centuries before. Their aim was
the use of religion to manipulate and control the masses. As we consider the development of religion throughout the middle ages to the eighteen century it will be evident that
this trait remains, the only factor that changes is the person or group of people who are attempting the control of the populace.
Part of the reason behind the success of Religion being used as a controlling mechanism of the populace is that it permeates so much of a persons life. It
