provide a safe foundation from which people can direct their lives. But, religion can also constrict an individual oppressing them so that they do not question, grow, and learn. With
these conditions in mind the following paper examines three religions, discussing their basic belief systems while examining their potential for growth and oppression. The religions discussed are Islam, Christianity, and
Judaism. Islam "Muslims believe there is only one God, Allah" (BBC Religion and Ethics: Islam, 2003). Interestingly enough, like many such religions, it seems simple enough to merely
have faith in the one God, "but the meaning behind it is very deep. You have to believe that there is only one God, Allah, who created the entire universe,
and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is his final messenger on earth" (BBC Religion and Ethics: Islam, 2003). There is a considerable amount of giving oneself up in
this religion as the follower submits to God. "Becoming a Muslim takes you into a new world. Its a world in which you are intensely aware of your relationship with
Allah, and aware that everything in the world exists because Allah chose that it should" (BBC Religion and Ethics: Islam, 2003). From this simplistic perspective the follower finds release and
personal liberation through approaching everything in life as it relates to what Allah wants, not what the individual wants. There is a sense of freedom from personal involvement as it
"it lifts many responsibilities, and replaces them with the single aim of living life in the way that Allah wants you to live it" (BBC Religion and Ethics: Islam, 2003).
