thinking about what we ourselves mean. One thing we can all agree on is that there have been more wars fought for the sake of religion than for any other
reason. We are in such a war as this paper is written. In his Preface, Partridge says that today, there is a "a growing awareness of the significance of
religions and beliefs" (p. 9). In fact, Partridge asserts that people cannot afford not to gain awareness and "understanding of religious beliefs and practice" (p. 9). Gunn suggests
there are three facets of religion: religion as belief, religion as identify and religion as a way of life. As a belief, religion is that set of tenets and convictions
one holds about God, truth, doctrines, about the spiritual (Gunn 189). As identity, religion refers to an affiliation with a specific group, it may be what the individual is born
into (Gunn). Identify religion is more about history and culture and traditions (Gunn). As a way of life, religion is the salient aspect of ones life (Gunn). It is the
mindset of the individual and is associated with certain actions, traditions and customers as well as certain rituals (Gunn 189). Partridge suggests religion is a classifier that "tells us
more about the user of the word (i.e. the classifier) than it does about the thing being classified" (p. 13). Partridge concludes that "religion is a historical artifact that different
