that for people living in democratic societies, having freedom of religion is of utmost importance. When ones religious practices are not allowed to be chosen but are instead dictated
then the inherent faith and ability to think creatively of ones beliefs is somehow pushed aside and can get lost or destroyed in the aftermath. This subsequently weakens a
people, allowing the higher power of government in a non-democratic society to keep a strict handhold over its subjects. This is quite useful for the powers in command as
it helps emphasize the servitude of the people. The lack of free will makes a populace fearful; when found to have some freedom, they will actually be found to
surrender it of their own accord. "Magistracy does not oblige him to put off either humanity or Christianity; but it is one thing to persuade, another to command; one
thing to press with arguments, another with penalties" (Locke PG). Locke notes how democracy, in and of itself, is not the end of
the line in relation to the state of religious toleration, inasmuch as its very definition is that of continued growth and human enhancement. Critical thinkers from centuries ago recognized
how true democracy called for law, constitutions and authoritative institutions which inherently required people to work together in spite of personal agendas; a combination of strong convictions with a readiness
to compromise by recognizing how not all situations will accommodate all people; and a strong sense of individuality and a commitment to civic goods that did not cater to any
