Religion serves a wide variety of purposes in society. One of the most important of these is the provision
of a greater human purpose and ethics of being. Through belief in religion individuals are given both explanation and goals by which they can gauge their lives and those
of others. Religion gives ultimate purpose (Haarsma, 1996). While religion can function to challenge and change prevalent social beliefs, it must also be remembered that religion is an
evolutionary phenomena, that is it changes just as social beliefs change. Religion could, in fact, be said to function as a mirror which not only reflects predominant social beliefs
but also which supports them. This contention is evidenced throughout history. The fact that religion functions as a mirror for prevalent social beliefs can also be supported with
a number of contemporary observations. One of the most obvious of these is the way in which religion is currently changing to accept the practice of homosexuality.
Although homosexuality is not a new behavior in society, it is one which is just now making its way into common acceptance among the general
public. While the current attitude toward this practice might still view it with a degree of contempt, society has changed to a great degree in the face of the
strengthening gay rights movement. Many societal institutions such as police forces, the military, political representatives, school teachers and business establishments, have had to reevaluate and change methods and ideas
