, August 2010 properly! Reliability refers to the consistency and dependability of something, specifically a
test. Validity means that a test of some sort actually measures what it purports to measure. Tests of any kind must have both reliability and validity. Those tests that are
normed on certain populations will have both reliability and validity for that specific population. In psychometry, one speaks of reliability and validity in terms of coefficients. As the authors
state, "a reliability coefficient is an index of reliability" (Cohen and Swerdlik, 2009, p. 139). That may sound vague but it isnt. It means that instruments may have different types
of reliability. Furthermore, there is always a degree of error with both reliability and validity. Errors may be the result of the way the test itself is constructed, with the
way the test is administered, with scoring procedures and with interpretations. There are some tests that must be administered by a trained professional. For example, intelligence tests must be administered
by someone who is comprehensively trained in intelligence, in that particular test, in how to score that test and in the proper way to interpret that test. Test-retest reliability
is one of the forms that is common in determining reliability. It means that the same person will score within a certain range when given the test a second time
at some point in the future. This will not hold true if the person has had certain experiences. For instance, if the individual suffers a trauma shortly before taking the
