Relaxation can be accomplished through a variety of techniques. Perhaps one of the most interesting is hypnosis. The hypnotic
process can be either self induced or involve a therapist (Zahourek, 2001). In the latter case, however, the patient must look to the therapist more as a coach than
as an effector. At the same time, however, he emphasized that the relationship between the therapist and the patient is critical in that:
"the quality of the relationship between individuals highly influences the trust, belief in, and expectation of positive results that are inherent
to that process" (Zahourek, 2001). The hypnotic process essentially harnesses the phenomenal power
of the mind to accomplish both mental and physical goals which may at first seem impossible. First proposed to a western audience by Milton H. Erickson in the mid
twentieth century, the hypnotic process is not that new to the world as a whole. Allman (1992) writes:
"The importance of harnessing the power of the mind has long been a staple of folk wisdom, from the teachings of Zen masters to the New
Age notion of playing an inner game of tennis or golf. Today, using a variety of new tools and techniques for viewing the brain in action, scientists are revealing that
such age-old wisdom is rooted in biology". Ericksons work followed that of such names
