The following paper first presents a discussion, or literary review, of the notion of relative power, and then examines an individuals position of relative power based on their specific elements
of identity as it involves society. The paper examines experiences of the individual as well. Relative Power Relative power is the possession of power in society that is
relative to ones standing through such things as race and gender and religious beliefs, as well as many other elements that go into making up a group of people or
an individual. In the United States the cultural patterns are often seen as something that "reinforce the social myths of equal opportunity and a classless society where there are underprivileged
people, but none with unearned privileges" and there is an incredibly strong foundation that lies in the autonomy of individuals" (Bing, 2005). In light of this the United States has
a tendency to believe that all people are equal and no single person or group holds the majority of relative power. However, the truth is otherwise and it is very
likely that those who believe no relative power exists are white and male. This is something that many people of culture, culture that is not white, will strongly attest
to. The American Psychological Association (2000) indicates that, "It is important to note that it is the power of White individuals, both through individual and institutional decisions, that results in
the racism that makes it hard for African Americans and other people of color, for example, to obtain equal housing opportunities." This power is relative power; not complete, but relative.
