and Darcy, make preconceived judgments about others, and ultimately come to find that the truth is far more complex than can be summed up in those assumptions. The following paper examines the relationship between these two characters, as well as the relationship that exists between the characters of Jane and Charles. Jane and Charles Jane and Charles are really two quite similar people. Jane is a very sweet and good natured individual who believes the best in people. This often leads her to be hurt, but it does not stop her from thinking the best of people. As one author notes, "Jane is a static character?as she is basically a model of virtue from the beginning" (ClassicNotes). Charles is the male version of Jane for is "an amiable and good-tempered person. He is not overly concerned with class differences, and Janes poor family connections are not a serious deterrent to his attachment to her" (ClassicNotes). As such both of these characters are individuals who begin as kind and caring people, people who are temporarily discouraged perhaps by others, and then individuals who go on to create a relationship that is lasting and caring. Throughout much of the novel it is the words and beliefs of others that keep Jane and Charles apart. Jane and Charles listen to the gossip of others, to the opinions of others and this keeps them from following their hearts. In the end, however, through the honest awakenings of Darcy and Elizabeth for the most part, they come together.
