married for fifteen years and are the parents of Josh and Erin. The marriage has been dying a slow death for quite awhile, and has plunged into a fa?ade
of happy appearances for the sake of the children. However, when the children go off to summer camp, Ben and Katie discover they can no longer keep up the
pretense and decide to separate and possibly divorce. The film provides a series of flashbacks as a way of revealing to the audience how a couple that once seemed
so much in love could be on the path toward divorce court. This film is perhaps best analyzed within a communication context as decisions Ben and Katie navigate several
critical decision points throughout the course of their marriage offer clues as to what can go wrong in a relationship and ponders whether or not it can be fixed. First,
Ben and Katie are defined primarily by traditional gender roles even though Katie is a working mother. Ben and Katie both wanted marriage with children and life in the
suburbs. But when Bens workday was over, Katies was still going on with a household to run and children to care for. There is less time for the
couple to enjoy each other, and Ben especially resents the lack of sexual spontaneity. In one flashback sequence, as Ben and Katie are about to succumb to passion on
the kitchen counter, Katie suddenly remembers she forgot to perform one of her maternal roles - as tooth fairy - and scurries to place some money under the childs pillow
before she forgets. Ben is interested only in sexual satisfaction in that moment, and instead of appreciating that Katie is both a wife and a mother, he expects her
