educational. There are passionate relationships that seem to all but burn themselves out because they are too fierce to last for long. There are relationships built on discord and relationships built on the notion of partnerships. And, then there is the ultimate relationship concerning soul maters. In Virginia Woolfs "A Haunted House" and Paul Laurence Dunbars "After the Quarrel" are two pieces that present the reader with different types of relationships. The following paper examines, comparing and contrasting, the two as they address or present relationships. Relationships: Woolf and Dunbar Woolfs work is one that speaks of two ghosts haunting a house, seeking some treasure, some answer. It is a couple and the narrator is witnessing some of their haunting, wondering what they are looking for. The ghosts work together, excited it seems, and curious to find what they have left behind. In Dunbars poem the narrator is illustrating how an argument took place and the relationship is over. They will sleep alone and their friendship will not exist any longer. The narrator seems nonplussed at the fact the relationship is over, indicating that the friendship was not much of a friendship if it "cannot stand so slight a test" (Dunbar 8). In Woolfs story the reader is not really sure about the couple until at one point the reader learns that the woman died "hundreds of years ago" and the man, perhaps continuing on after her death, left the house, "left her, went North, went East, saw the stars turned in the Southern sky; sought the house, found it dropped beneath the Downs" (Woolf).
