Midnights Children is much more accessible. This paper explores the relationship between the novels structure and its theme. Discussion Midnights Children won the Booker Prize in 1981, seven years before
The Satanic Verses made its appearance. Although the latter is the one that caused the hostile reaction, the former is also "a novel that not only risks offending some
readers, but also fiercely challenges our understanding of history, nationhood, and narrative" ("Midnights Children"). Midnights Children is narrated by Saleem Sinai, who was born at midnight on August 15,
1947, the exact moment at which India became an independent sovereign nation, free at last from over 100 years of British rule. The title of the book refers to him
and to the other children born that special night ("Midnights Children"). Saleem can be seen as a metaphor for India itself, and his story is inextricably linked to that of
the subcontinent ("Midnights Children"). Because the history of India is so rich and varied, the novel is multi-layered and complex, and Rushdie was in theater is called "breaking the fourth
wall"-he deliberately calls attention to the fact that we are reading a book by having Saleem comment on his work ("Midnights Children"). This has the effect of taking us out
