/aftersale.htm -- properly! Daniel Defoes novel, Roxana, the Fortunate Mistress, would be controversial by todays standards, but back in 1724, it was positively scandalous. For perhaps the first time in the history of literature, a single mother who struggles to make ends meet after her husband abandons the family, is considered. Unfortunately, however, during the eighteenth century, opportunities for women were practically non-existent, for they had no social roles in their own right; they were only expected to serve as wives and mothers. Roxana was, first and foremost, a survivor, who was not going to allow any social patriarchy to deter her from forging an independent life for herself. However, with freedom of choice comes the responsibility for these choices, the consequences of which Roxana would come to learn only too well. Roxana would come to regret her choice in a mate soon after the wedding. Though handsome, she often described her husband as a conceited fool who was constantly pontificating his often embarrassing opinions, much to everyones annoyance, especially Roxanas. Her life with her husband was marital misery, compounded by the arrival of five children in a few short years. Roxanas lone confidant was her trusted maid, Amy, in whom she could confide her innermost hopes and dreams. Her husband kept threatening to leave one day and never return, and Roxana was secretly living for that day. However, when it finally arrived, Roxana didnt know what to do. Her children needed to eat, and her husband had completely mismanaged their funds, and there was no type of income upon which they could depend.
