Bandura posited that people who have high self-efficacy are more likely to have high aspirations, think soundly, think in the long-term, establish challenges for themselves and make a commitment to meet those challenges (1997). Often these people will guide their actions by visualizing successful outcomes whereas people with low self-efficacy will tend to dwell on their personal deficiencies or on the ways in which things can go wrong rather than how things can go right (Bandura, 1997). DeMoulin explains that self-efficacy is about each childs sensitivity toward a task combined with their level of confidence, motivation, and their perceived ability to control the stress associated with whatever the task may be (1998). In terms of motivation, individuals with high self-efficacy will motivate themselves by forming beliefs about what they can do (Bandura, 1997). They set goals and develop action plans to meet the goals. Motivation is higher when they believe they can actually achieve the goals but they can adjust the goals based on their own progress and self-evaluation (Bandura, 1997). The degree of self-efficacy an individual has is a major factor in the goals an individual sets for himself, how much effort will be spent towards reaching the goal, how long they will persevered in trying to attain the goal and the amount of resilience they have when they do face setbacks, or even failure (Bandura, 1997). It follows then that when a child has success, when the child accomplishes something, feelings of self-efficacy are developed and enhanced. Self-esteem has to do with how each child feels about himself, positively or negatively (DeMoulin, 1998). Self-esteem, then, is a factor or trait that describes how any person perceives himself.
