Curriculum could be expanded to include both the content and the process and instruction might be described to include specific types of instructional approaches, such as the inquiry method. The term curriculum is typically defined as the subjects that are taught at a school or as the content taught in a particular discipline, such as algebra or writing. Instruction is mostly defined as teaching something in particular. The definition of curriculum, in this writers opinion, needs to incorporate the intended curriculum and the unintended curriculum, which is typically referred to as the hidden curriculum. The hidden curriculum includes all those messages and lessons that are conveyed through the teachers behaviors, verbal and nonverbal, intentional and not intentional. Thus, the curriculum is the whole experience. Instruction can be defined as the strategies or the procedures the teacher selects and uses to deliver the curriculum content. This leads directly into the relationship between curriculum and instruction. They cannot be separated. While there can certainly be a written curriculum stuck away on a shelf or included in volumes of documents and books, classroom instruction does not take place without a curriculum.
