Reich (2002) points out how the benefits of technological advancements, coupled with the tremendous need to keep costs in check in an ever-globalizing world of commerce, compelling organizations to make tremendous cut backs where operations and staff are concerned. It used to be that workers were highly valued commodities whereby their dedication of forty years was recognized with a token of appreciation and a big send-off into retirement. "The underlying cause isnt a change in the American character. It is to be found in the increasing ease by which buyers and investors can get better deals, and the competitive pressure this imposes on all enterprises. As the pressure intensifies, institutional bonds are loosening" (Reich, 2002, p. 71). In direct correlation with this is how the fundamental nature of work has changed by virtue of more emphasis being placed upon the individual. Society today is filled with single parents, dual income families and those who forego personal commitments in order to climb the corporate ladder, all who must acquire much more by contemporary standards than what existed only decades ago. The new approach for redefining ones value amidst an ever-changing social landscape may present opportunity on the one hand but as Reich (2002) points out, it also reflects tremendous insecurity as compared with those who once enjoyed the assurance of being what Reich (2002) terms an organization man or woman.
