Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has a debilitating effect on a significant portion of the nations populace.
Many of those afflicted with COPD can benefit from rehabilitation. Numerous factors affect patient selection, assessment, and program implementation, however. The most prominent of these factors pertain to
the specifics of the patients illness. When such factors are taken into mind: "these
programs are effective in reducing symptoms of dyspnea, and improving exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with COPD" (Miller, 2004, 711)
COPD can be quite severe both in its physiological implications and in its psychosocial implications. The condition can not only be
potentially life threatening, it can take a tremendous financial and psychosocial impact on both those who suffer from it, from their families, and from society in general. Early detection
is critical in applying our best regime for the treatment of COPD. So too is education to both acquaint individuals with symptoms so that they might seek help at
the onset of a respiratory event and to acquaint them with the causes of their condition and the appropriate interventionary methods so that they might implement lifestyle changes to reduce
their likelihood of suffering from the disease. Rehabilitation classes take over this function in most cases when a patients disease has progressed to the point that it is unmanageable
without skilled medical intervention. Respiratory therapist often take a front row seat in this management. Respiratory therapists not only administer rehabilitation programs they often play a direct role
