Internet at the hands of the government. But, in all truthfulness the Internet would be a far safer and more economically rewarding place if there was more government regulation. The
following paper examines this truth, arguing that the Internet needs more government regulation. Regulating the Internet: Crime One of the most
prevalent problems on the Internet today involves identity theft, spamming that steals the funds of individuals, and various scams that put many people at risk. Most people simply assume that
the Internet is not the problem with identity theft as it normally involves credit cards. But, the Internet puts many people at risk due to the fact that people are
using their credit cards online, and thus putting themselves in a position where their information is in the Internet system. So while simply owning a credit card puts one at
risk, using a card on the Internet puts one at a even greater risk and yet there is no government regulation concerning any such threats. One author offers the following
example of just one case of identity theft: "Ignacio Ramirez of San Diego, California, received a telephone call last February from a Boston medical-equipment supplier demanding $85,000 for purchased medical
supplies. Ramirez, himself, did not make these purchases. Weeks later he was to learn that he had, in fact, been a victim of identity theft. A woman had obtained Ramirezs
personal information from the Internet" (Elgren). In relationship to issues such as spamming and phishing this is a very serious problem on
the Internet. For example, one can talk to anyone who sells on Ebay and uses Paypal to hear many stories of phishing and spamming. An Ebay seller or buyer will
