of the public. In another respect, however, there are too much and too restrictive of regulation for some CAM disciplines. The thesis can be presented, in fact, that
many of these regulations have arisen not out of any logical concern for public welfare but rather out of concern that CAM takes away business from mainstream medicine!
It is easy to accept the premise that alternative medicines should be regulated. The degree to which that regulation is taken, however, is sometimes
questionable. Consider, for example, the regulations surrounding the use of herbs. Because of federal law, herbs cannot be labeled as to what they are effective in treating and
they cannot be sold as medicine. Instead, they have to be sold as dietary supplements. This is true despite the fact that herbs such as aloe, echinacea, feverfew,
garlic, ginger, gingko biloba, ginseng, goldenseal, Saint Johns Wort, barberry bark, myrrh gum, horehound, speedwell and ginger continue to be employed by individuals in the treatment of a diversity of
medical problems. Willow trees are the natural source of aspirin. Medicinal plants provide steroids, digitalis, quinine and many more medicines that line the tool chest of modern pharmaceuticals.
Unfortunately, despite the usefulness that alternative medicines like herbs have proven to have, most in modern society are reluctant to use them.
