a regression analysis. The data supplied by Smash (2005) looks potentially viable; however, there are several problems with using this data. There will reach a point where the blood alcohol
level will render a person incapable of driving, so the regression beyond that limit has little or no value. There is also a difficulty with the analysis of the increase
as this is not an increase that is steady, there is a sudden increase and as such a simple regression will not give the correct results. However, looking at
data that can be utilised we may look at the patterns seen in different areas, we also need data where there can be the comparison of like for like, ideals
there should be at least three data points prior to the regression, but this is not always possible. If we want to assess the progress of states in reducing the
number of fatalities due to alcohol we can use the data from NHTSAs National Center for Statistics and Analysis (U.S. DOT Releases, 2005), this gives the statistics for different blood
alcohol levels for the years 2004 and 2005, if we assume the same pattern will be seen in future years we can assess the number of fatalities that may be
seen. Using this we see the flowing in terms of the national fatalities rates for the different blood alcohol levels The changes are small, but looking at the
projection based on the 2004 and 2005 figures using regression analysis there is a decrease in the fatalities in the first two categories, however, there is an increase in the
last indicating that the trend here in not that which is desired. However, this is the national figures, if we want to look at individual states this can also be
