theaters are defined as "professional theatre companies outside of New York City that produce their own seasons" (Regional theatre). The term is most often applied to theaters that are
members of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT); LORT theaters "are non-profit organizations and agree to use special contracts made in agreement with the Actors Equity Association, the professional organization
and labor union for actors working in the United States" (Regional theatre). LORT theaters, of which there are more than 80 throughout the United States, often produce new plays that
then go to Broadway; they also produce revivals and plays coming from Londons West End (Regional theatre). They sometimes produce musicals, but more usually mount "straight plays" (Regional theatre).
Many regional theaters have more than one stage which enables them to mount more traditional productions on the "main stage" and experimental works in a smaller space such as
a studio theater or "black box theater" (Regional theatre). The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, for example, has three stages: the Globe Theatre itself, a traditional proscenium
house; the Cassius Carter Centre Stage, a small theater in the round where experimental works are performed, and the Festival Stage, an outdoor venue where the company frequently produces Shakespeare.
Regional theaters often rely on "donations from patrons and businesses, season ticket subscriptions, and grants from organizations, in addition to ticket sales" for their revenue (Regional theatre).
