Organization, said: regional agreements have made a generally positive contribution to the liberalization of world trade." In many cases, these types of regional agreements allowed countries to enter the global
business market (Ruggiero, 1997). The alliances help countries to adapt to the effects of globalization (Ruggiero, 1997). Beyond economics, regional alliances have helped to resolve political and other issues that
erupt in a region (Ruggiero, 1997). Ruggiero (1997) went on to say that the European Union is the best example of all alliances. The European Union in itself will
have the effect of avoiding any kind of continental war in that region (Ruggiero, 1997). Thus, this regional integration services a multitude of purposes beyond economic and globalization. The European
Union (EU) was first established in 1957 under the name of the "European Economic Community" (Oxfam GB, 2007). There are both advantages and disadvantages of the EU. The advantages include:
* A vast market of more than 400 million people for companies to market their goods and services to (Oxfam GB, 2007). * Citizens in the member states can travel
freely between and among countries, including securing employment in other countries (Oxfam GB, 2007). * The market is more competitive, thus, consumers have a wider variety and better prices (Oxfam
GB, 2007). The disadvantages include: * The formal institutions of the EU have far too much power" and have taken power away from individual countries in terms of making their
own decisions about economic and political matters" (Oxfam GB, 2007). There are three governing bodies in the EU: the European Commission; the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament (Oxfam
