It used to be that regional accents demonstrated a type of knowledge that had been handed down in the family generation after generation. But as Daley
(2010) points out, those jobs are gone. Today theres a new ideal going around that specifies a better form of English speech that is especially important if you are on
a job interview. The bottom line is, it is important to talk properly. If you have an accent and you can do
it, get training to modify your speech. If you cant get training right away, be aware that you might be at a disadvantage, especially if you have a thick accent,
which tends to trigger an emotional response in the interview that is not under their control. This type of prejudice isnt new. Samuel
Johnson started this fight in the 18th Century. Since then, Received Pronunciation, or RP has been considered proper English, speech youd recognize at Hogwarts or in the announcers voice for
the British Broadcasting Corporation. Since it is considered proper English in British society, the people who speak RP are interpreted as being
more intelligent and self-confident, as well as having greater wealth and ambition. With that going for them, you can see just how proper speech could affect your job interview.
Fortunately, while only 3 percent of British speak RP, the news is that we are fast becoming a global environment and many people
