levels of equality. Society, in essence, has changed a great deal because of these shifts in the institution of marriage. There are perhaps many other reasons, however, why the institution
of marriage has changed, and in some ways it has still remained essentially the same. The following paper refutes points made by Danielle Crittendon in her essay "About Marriage."
Refutation: About Marriage In Crittendons essay she speaks a great deal about the feminist perspective, often refuting that perspective herself. But, at
the same time there are moments when she seems to completely agree, taking a turn on a statement and indicating that in our feminist society men have found almost a
new sense of freedom from family obligations. She indicates the man feels he is not needed and can move on. At one point she states, "Yet this quest for perfect
parity in marriage will never liberate women from our duties and cravings as mothers. What it can do---what it has done for nearly half the men in America---is provide an
excuse for shirking the duties of fatherhood" (Crittendon 49). This modern world where women can work, and do work, and want to
work, does not eliminate the need for men and this has not provided an excuse for them to essentially run away. In all honesty men have been avoiding the responsibility
of fatherhood and their duties as husbands for generations, for centuries. Men have often left the children in the care of the mother, going to work, going overseas for duties,
or even engaging in affairs with mistresses and such. This is a reality in many "civilized" cultures throughout time and the modern position of women has not really altered that
