diabetes. Mary lives at home with her mother and suffers form learning difficulties. The observation includes the treatment of Mary after she had been referred following hospitalisation and diagnosis. The
observation was the way in which a plan was developed for and with her and her role being defined, she had to learn how to manage her own condition and
lessen the potential risks associated with the illness. When Mary first came to the GP surgery she had become moody and was uncommunicative, which her mother said was out
of character for Mary and her recent behaviour patterns. However, the overall progress of Mary was good, but there was additional time needed fore both the planning and the communication
to ensure she understood what she should and should not do. The primary health carers still expect to have to reiterate and remind Mary of the way she needs to
look after herself, but are also hopeful that she will cope well with the reminders as well as regular checks on her behaviour patterns and blood sugar levels. 2. Feeling
When starting this observation there was a feeling difficulty. The management of any condition takes careful communication to ensure there is not undue fear created but there is also an
appreciation of the true nature of the condition and the care the patient needs to take of themselves. With Mary it was a little overwhelming knowing the importance of communicating
this is an easy to understand and memorable manner. Mary had learning difficulties, which are not uncommon, it is estimated that about 5% of those in school at the
