do with this amendment. The following paper examines the First Amendment and discusses how it comes into play in the court case Loving v State of Virginia which was is
a case wherein the "Supreme Court ruled in favor of Richard and Mildred Loving and overturned all laws that prevented interracial marriages" (Socio Cyber Forum, 2007). Reflections on
the First and Fourteenth Amendments The First Amendment is as follows: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the
freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances" (FindLaw.com, 2009). While this
is a relatively straightforward amendment it is also one that can be read into other institutions of the nation such as marriage and personal opinions. While it was the Declaration
of Independence that indicates people have a right to liberty as well as the pursuit of happiness, this is almost seen as an amendment as well for the amendments, in
different ways, support this perspective. As such the First Amendment is clearly an important one in relationship to the rights of people. The Fourteenth Amendment addresses the rights of
citizens and part of the amendment states "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall
any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property" which is also clearly connected to the rights of the people in terms freedoms (The Fourteenth Amendment, 2009).
