The First Amendment to the US Constitution has played a tremendously important role in what we perceive as our rights
as American citizens. Consider, for example, the freedom of the press, the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion for which it provides. Each is an incredibly
important factor in how we view ourselves as Americans. Interestingly, each of these three important freedoms is integrally related not just to one another but also to other key
freedoms like "private enterprise, free markets, free trade, rule of law, constitutionally-limited central government . . . and freedom to bear arms" (Hayes, 2002). These freedoms even relate to
our right to privacy. The First Amendment specifies that Congress shall pass "no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting
the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a
redress of grievances". The freedom of the press, of course, is one of the most often touted aspects of a true
