speculated about its importance to society as a whole, and the mechanisms by which it might be waged most effectively. However, it must be said that war is an ever-changing
enterprise, one that changes shape whenever society changes, or whenever technological advances are made. That being said, there is still a great degree of application to modern warfare in the
words of even the most ancient philosophers of war. This paper will take a brief look at some of the figures who have philosophized about war and military strategy over
the years, and make a determination about which classical thinkers ideas adapt most readily to the realities of modern day warfare. This section of the paper helps the student
briefly summarize the ideologies presented by each of the four thinkers covered in the paper. One of the most ancient of war philosophers is Sun Tzu, whose classic treatise, "The
Art of War" has survived and exists in hundreds of translations in the modern day (Putatunda, 2010). Sun Tzus approach to war is comprehensive and involves not just military principles
but also psychological and philosophical (Taoist) principles as well; consequently, it has often been adapted for its applicability in other areas of life, such as business strategy development (Strategies &
Tactics, 2010). Henri Jomini was a writer on war dating to the Napoleonic era, whose conception of war was largely built up around the identification of key strategic points
