This examination shows, on a fundamental level, the significance of education, but also that education is never finished. In other words, it shows that completion of a degree at the University of Phoenix is the beginning of the journey, not its end, as learning for a nurse should be a lifelong process. Reflection As I began my course of study at the University of Phoenix, I already knew that education was extremely significant to my professional growth, but I really could not see at that time past my immediate nursing skills. In regards to my professional competence in problem solving, as well as written and oral communication and information retrieval, my skills were extremely general and I relied primarily on experience to guide in my role as house supervisor. Looking back, it is easy to see that my goals were rather simplistic. In other words, I was primarily concerned with simply earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) and continuing in my role as a nursing supervisor. This demonstrates that one of the functions of education is to cause individuals to think about the course of their lives, especially the course of their daily professional lives. We tend to get stuck in ruts where we rely on the same patterns and information to govern our actions. However, the constantly changing nature of our current society makes such habits not only non-productive, but actually dangerous, as it is essential to nursing professionalism, and many other professions as well, to continue to learn, assimilate new information and continually improve in order to fulfill our professional goals and achieve a high standard of practice.
