and how Mandelas leadership style compares to that of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Paolo Freire. Leadership Lets tackle the last point first. In his book, Mandela describes his childhood,
and reveals that his father was probably the most significant influence on him in his life. Mandela writes that he believes nurture, not nature is "the primary moulder of personality";
even so, he recognizes that facets of his own personality come from his father (Mandela, 1994, p. 7). Specifically, his father possessed a "proud rebelliousness, a stubborn streak of
fairness, that I recognize in myself" (Mandela, 1994, p. 7). Mandelas leadership style is one of conciliation and cooperation, which is rare considering the suffering he endured in 27
years in prison. But perhaps recognizing that continuing bitterness and confrontation would not achieve the results he wanted, he opted for reasoned discourse and inclusion. When Mandela took over the
government, one of his first actions was to establish a "Truth and Reconciliation Commission to examine atrocities committed under apartheid, and to provide outcomes designed to satisfy the yearning for
justice of victims and their families, while allowing perpetrators who confessed to experience forgiveness and reconciliation" (South Africas criminal justice system: a very long walk to freedom, 2004). Among those
who were invited to participate were the guards that had kept him in prison (South Africas criminal justice system..., 2004). It takes a man of strong character and great gentleness
