Odysseus, a Greek hero, ten years to return home from the Trojan War. I know that youre thinking that must be dry as dust, but honestly, it is not. There
is a lot of drama and it also presents some profound questions, such as, to what degree do human beings control their destiny and how much is due to fate
or intervention of the gods. I had the impression that the ancient Greeks considered themselves totally helpless before the will of their gods, but Homer shows that what Odysseus
endures is not due to capriciousness on the part of the god who persecutes him (which is Poseidon) but is rather due to his own hubris (pride). For example,
Odysseus and his men make landfall and begin to search for food and they find a cave where sheep are corralled and crates of milk and cheese are stored. Odysseuss
men plead with him to grab some food and leave, but Odysseus is intrigued by their discovery and lingers. The owner of the food who makes his home in the
cave returns and they are trapped due to the fact that the caves inhabitant is Polyphemus, the giant Cyclops and the son of Poseidon, the god of the ocean and
he rolls a huge boulder across the opening to the cave. Polyphemus eats two of Odysseuss men and it is clear that he plans to make meals of Odysseus and
remainder of his crew in the near future. At this point, in the story Odysseus is behaving in a manner that was greatly prized in ancient Greece. Rather than
retaliating against Polyphemus immediately when his men are murdered, which is what he wants to do, he waits. He uses his rational capacity and devises a plan. Only the Cyclops
