the changes in the social and cultural environment had changed for the former decade. Commercials grew and the conflict as well as aggressiveness within society changed the way in which
the world was perceived. The seventies are credited with being the birth time of the movement that was to become known as avant-guard. The 1960s may have been an age
of free love and the embracing of personal freedoms, but the art world was still constrained, in was the 1970s that saw the freedom of art with crossovers with music
fashion and commercialism. The discovery of new art forms, from performance art to more extreme art materials and subjects would be both shocking and lead to what is terms today
as Pop Art being part of a much larger and wider encompassing popular art movement. 2. 1970s Culture Pop art itself is the abbreviation which is used for the term
popular art. The movement of Pop art had many aims, one of which was to refresh the art world. Mainstream art had been limited in appeal, becoming a identified with
social class and standing. Pop art sought to change this and bring art back to the masses. The styles that has been seen were though of as to sophisticated
and complex, appeal to the elite and to abstract from every day meaning. Two of the most popular artists of this era, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein had a style
that rejected elitism. Even the subjects of their art reflected common life. One of the most famous works by Warhol was a Campbells soup can. The development of pop
