managed to incorporate his own traits into the characters he created. Born in Oak Park, Illinois to Dr. Clarence and Grace Hemingway on July 21, 1899, Ernest Hemingway was
the second of six children (Tyler 2). From his mother, he received a love of the arts, and from his father a lifelong affection for nature. The Hemingway
family would take summer vacations at Bear Lake in northern Michigan, and the fishing trips young Ernest would take with his moody father were always remembered fondly. In Hemingways
first collection of short stories entitled In Our Time (1925), he introduces the character of Nick Adams as a young boy. Throughout the course of fourteen short stories, Nick
grows up, and has many life experiences that mirror those of the young Ernest Hemingway. After his graduation, young Hemingway left home and embraced his first job as a journalist
with the Kansas City Star. The young reporter began creating a detached, no-nonsense style that would become his narrative trademark. When Uncle Sam finally entered the First World
War in 1917, Hemingway tried to enlist, but was constantly rejected because of his poor eyesight. However, he would finally experience the wartime excitement he craved as a Red
Cross ambulance driver, and eventually joined the Allies in northern Italy. Hemingway wanted to see the war up-close, and so he volunteered for emergency canteen duty to treat wounded
soldiers on the frontlines. On July 8, 1918, while providing the Italian soldiers with cigarettes and chocolate, Hemingway sustained his first of many injuries when his legs were struck
