While some of the residents enjoyed and looked forward to conversing with the student, the others who chose to remain sequestered from such visitation had apparently pulled into themselves out of what can only be a reaction to losing their freedom. of loneliness is quite tangible in Mary Crest where people are removed from virtually every aspect that has come to represent their entire existence. Some have family and friends
who visit, others do not. The students visits helped to alleviate some of that loneliness for some people who openly encouraged the chance to talk with a new person;
it did not matter what the topic of conversation was, only that they had someone to talk with who took an interest in what they had to say. Jerry from
Italy made quite an impression on the student because of the depth of interaction they shared, which has caused the student to consider visiting her even after the class project
is completed. Clearly, the student has taken much more out of this project than what she may have originally intended, a reality that came from realizing that even though
she had not spent time with elderly people since her own grandparents, she harbored great compassion toward the residents she spent time with at Mary Crest. Seeing how they
responded to her desire to engage them in conversation and bringing her dog showed the student just how deprived of positive interaction they truly are.
