Sometimes, life seems to be more about going through mind-numbing daily routines and meeting others deadlines or fulfilling obligations than it does about the individual. There are always jobs
to complete, studying to do, and papers to write. Is that living or merely existing? Like a breath of fresh air, one of my class requirements demanded I
stop dead in my tracks and examine my own life through reflection before resuming the rat race. But contemplation of life is not like breathing; it requires learning how
to think in such terms. Reflections are not comprised simply of abstract thoughts; they are uniquely rooted in a persons own feelings, emotions, and life experiences. Before coming
to any conclusions, it is important to follow-up on how conscious living can be achieved through voluntary simplicity and mindful living. Back in the mid-1970s, Duane Elgin and Arnold Mitchell
(1977) wrote an article on Voluntary Simplicity which addressed the back to nature movement that was popular at the time. They explained how voluntary simplicity was all-encompassing, that it
was both an internal and external process, and a way of stripping away all of the superficial possessions that are unnecessary in order to focus on that which is most
important not only in sustaining an individuals own life, but can make a positive difference in the lives of others. For instance, instead of turning on all the lights
in the house at night, just reserve lighting for one room requires light for reading or studying. Saving electricity not only saves on utility bills, but is also being
