Diabetes is now an official and general epidemic in the US and carries many negative implications for those who make little or no effort to control it with diet, but one benefit of the "diabetic diet" is that it forces those needing it to practice healthy eating habits. For the most part, that was reflected in the record of one days foot intake. How do you feel about the dietary intake for the day you recorded? I was able to meet all basic requirements in terms of minimum values. "The type of foods eaten, the amount of foods eaten, and when food is eaten are important facts for people with diabetes to know in order to control their blood sugar" (Nutrition for diabetics, n.d.). I watch diet rather closely on a regular basis, so this was not a totally new experience. Sodium content was high, however, and likely should not be quite as high on a regular basis. Did you consume the recommended minimum number of servings from each of the food groups of the food pyramid? I met the recommended number of minimum servings from most groups of the pyramid but was low in whole grain. Every diabetic knows that "foods containing carbohydrate ... have the most impact on blood sugars" (Treatment of Diabetes, n.d.) and so the diabetic must guard against taking in too high a carbohydrate count in a single day or even in a single meal.
